Epic Games has unveiled more details about the future of competitive Fortnite as part of its three-part blog series. The developers shared the first details about the Fortnite World Cup today and gave a brief outline of plans for the game’s $100 million prize pool in 2019.
Information about this tournament began to emerge midway through last year, starting with Epic unveiling its initial ideas for a Fortnite World Cup. That idea has now become a reality, with the first Fortnite World Cup set to begin on April 13. The qualifying period will run from April 13 to June 16, and a $1 million prize pool will be allocated to eligible players.
The top 100 Solo players and top 50 Duos from the qualifying rounds will travel to New York for the Fortnite World Cup finals, which are set to take place on July 26 to 28. This is where the competition will really start to heat up with a whopping $30 million prize pool. Every single player who qualifies and competes in the finals is guaranteed at least $50,000—a prize that’s worth more than the average wage in a lot of countries.
In addition to the World Cup announcement, Epic also confirmed that weekly $1 million tournaments will continue through to the end of 2019. Again, Epic is promising to open up these tournaments to better serve a variety of playstyles, with different modes and formats to be revealed in the coming weeks.
Finally, much to the delight of competitive regions across the world, Epic has promised better tournament tools and prizes to select partners. Details on these tools haven’t been revealed yet, but we’ll certainly see more teams gearing up to claim their slice of the biggest prize pool in competitive gaming.
